June 24, 2026 Update

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, along with Pierce County, City of Tacoma and Elevate Health, continues to adjust our coordinated response to the opioid crisis.

Starting in June, we began to wind down the Opioid Task Force (OTF) and shift to a sustainable behavioral-heath response housed in existing programs.

Learn more about this new response in our press release. You can find the latest data on drug use and overdose on our website.

about the otf

The Tacoma-Pierce County Opioid Task Force (OTF) is a partnership between Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Pierce County, the City of Tacoma, and Elevate Health. The OTF is a regional response to the opioid crisis and works to reduce stigma, improve health, raise awareness, and remove barriers to treatment for people with substance use disorder.

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in Pierce County. Our most recent data show that while overdose deaths declined through much of 2024, the numbers trended back toward previous levels at the end of the year.  Opioids, including synthetic opioids like Fentanyl, are a major driver of overdose death in Pierce County.

Membership in the OTF is open to anyone impacted by, interested in, or working to respond to the opioid crisis.
